Every ten years, the Census collects important population data that determines fair political representation and the distribution of more than $800 billion in federal resources to our local communities. This year, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, backed by Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Department of Justice, directed the Census Bureau to add an untested and unnecessary citizenship question to the 2020 Census.
The addition of this citizenship question to the Census is anti-immigrant and a direct threat to our communities. We need your help to oppose it.
The citizenship question is a deliberate attempt by the Trump administration to erase immigrants and communities of color from our democracy. By asking individuals to provide their citizenship status, the Trump administration exacerbates families’ real fear of being deported or separated. It increases the risk that already vulnerable communities will skip the census, go uncounted, and miss out on vital government resources, the consequences of which will be felt for the next decade.
There is still time to act. The Census Bureau has submitted the citizenship question for public comment. Tell Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross that the citizenship question is undemocratic, harms our communities, and could harm the integrity of census data.
